THE cult pink wine of the natty wine world. Malvasia, Moscadella, Insolia and Nerello Mascalese in the mix, with a texture more akin to light reds from regions such as the Jura. A food-friendly, gluggable wine of immense interest. ABV: 11.5%
Malvasia, Moscadella, Catarratto, Nero & Mascalese organically farmed and picked by hand. The grapes are destemmed, gentle press, 10 day maceration and spontaneous fermentation in epoxy tanks. The wine is unfined and 10 mg of sulphur is added.
In the winery his work follows the same philosophy of using what nature provides him. There are no industrial yeasts, sulfites, or anything else added to the wines. All of the wines are fermented in small, neutral tanks and no wood is used in the cellar in order for all the wines to express their specific territory to the full extent. Frank uses neutral epoxy tanks and anforas because he likes the round shape which allows the wines to be nourished with the fine lees moving freely during the aging process.
Frank Cornelissen's wines deserve the attention of every serious wine lover. He is one of the great figures in the natural wine world, but whether you are a fully signed-up naturalista or not, these are wines you don't want to miss. They are the best in Sicily, and some of the best in Italy. Frank makes wine in the simplest possible way, which is also the most difficult. He strives to avoid every unnecessary intervention in both vineyard and winery, and he does this without the wines ever losing their precision. They are very skilfully made. The entry-level Susucaru Rosso (previously known as Contadino, a field blend of 85% Nerello Mascalese with other local varieties) offers great value for a wine of its class. It provides an introduction to Frank's style, is ready to drink immediately, and is both idiosyncratic and unbelievably delicious. In a way, it is too delicious - you can easily drink a bottle of this in no time, and it is a wine that deserves to be admired. It is very appetising, with a beautiful bright red colour and an upfront wild strawberry flavour, but it is also sophisticated - with mouthwatering freshness and subtle, fine tannins making a harmonious whole. Magnificent on its own, and even better at dinner in the garden on a summer evening.
