There are several different formulations of morphine. This formulation is a quick-acting liquid medication used for the treatment of acute pain. Acute pain is pain that comes on quickly and occurs intermittently and is sometimes referred to as breakthrough pain. This medication can be used with another medication used to treat chronic pain.
This is a liquid preparation of morphine that comes in various strengths. This form of morphine is taken with or without food, either as needed for pain or as a regularly scheduled medication decided by your care provider. This medication comes as a dosage per volume (milligrams per milliliter). There are different types and doses of morphine. They come in different colours to help you tell the doses apart. There are also different brands of morphine. Common types include Sevredol and Oromorph (short acting) or MST Continus and MXL (long acting).
It is important that you take morphine regularly, even if you don't feel pain. The slow release tablets or capsules can take up to 48 hours to give you a steady dose. So if you stop and start, they won't work so well.
Usually, you start on a low dose of morphine and this is increased slowly until your pain is well controlled. Once your pain is under control, talk to your doctor about swapping to slow-release morphine. This may cut down the number of doses you have to take each day.
You can choose to take your morphine at any time of day but try to take it at the same time every day and space your doses evenly. For example, if you take morphine twice a day and have your first dose at 8am, take your second dose at 8pm.
Do not break, crush, chew or suck morphine slow-release tablets or capsules. If you do, the medicine will not be released gradually and the whole dose might get into your body in one go. This could cause a potentially fatal overdose.
Depending on why you're taking morphine, you may only need to take it for a short time. For example, if you're in pain after an injury or operation, you may only need to take morphine for a few days or weeks.
If you take morphine at the end of pregnancy there's a risk that your baby will get withdrawal symptoms when they're born. Morphine is often given for pain relief in labour and generally does not cause a problem for the baby, however your baby will be monitored closely once they're born to look for drowsiness or any breathing problems.
If your doctor or health visitor says your baby is healthy, you can take morphine while breastfeeding. However, it is best to only take morphine for a few days and at low doses. If you need to take it for longer, talk to your doctor. Your doctor may also recommend a different painkiller for you to use while breastfeeding.
Some everyday painkillers that you can buy without prescription from pharmacies contain codeine, which is a similar medicine to morphine. Painkillers from pharmacies with codeine in include co-codamol, Nurofen Plus and Solpadeine.

Hypertension and hypokalaemia are recognised complications of kaolin and morphine excess. This case highlights another danger of the mixture, namely its ability to cause respiratory depression when taken in high doses, thereby encouraging type II respiratory failure and worsening pulmonary hypertension in this patient who had a history of COPD. While the authors acknowledge that the patient had numerous medical issues that may also have contributed to the hypokalaemia, given the history of increased ingestion of the mixture 3 days before the presentation, we feel this was likely to be the main cause of the hypokalaemia. Other possibilities include malnutrition, endocrine disorders and medications. Investigations to evaluate the hypokalaemia further would include urinary electrolytes along with plasma rennin activity, aldosterone, 24 h urinary catecholamines, and serum cortisol.

Your prescriber should have discussed with you, how long the course of Morphine Oral Solution will last. They will arrange a plan for stopping treatment. This will outline how to gradually reduce the dose and stop taking the medicine. Always follow the instructions of your doctor and pharmacist. If you are changing from other types of morphine medication your doctor may have to change your dose.
Morphine has a risk for abuse and addiction, which can lead to overdose and death. Morphine may also cause severe, possibly fatal, breathing problems. To lower your risk, your doctor should have you use the smallest dose of morphine that works, and use it for the shortest possible time. The risk for severe breathing problems is higher when you start this medication and after a dose increase, or if you use the wrong dose/strength. Using this medication with alcohol or other drugs that can cause drowsiness or breathing problems may cause very serious side effects, including death. Get medical help right away if any of these very serious side effects occur: slow/shallow breathing, unusual lightheadedness, severe drowsiness/dizziness, difficulty waking up.
Before using this medication, women of childbearing age should talk with their doctor(s) about the risks and benefits. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. It may slightly increase the risk of birth defects if used during the first two months of pregnancy. Also, using it for a long time or in high doses near the expected delivery date may harm the unborn baby. To lessen the risk, use the smallest effective dose for the shortest possible time. Babies born to mothers who use this drug for a long time may develop severe (possibly fatal) withdrawal symptoms. Tell the doctor right away if you notice any symptoms in your newborn baby such as crying that doesn't stop, slow/shallow breathing, irritability, shaking, vomiting, diarrhea, poor feeding, or difficulty gaining weight.
